Letter: Grim reaper must go

To the Editor:

Mitch McConnell has said he will not bring forth any legislation in the Senate that the president has not said he will sign.  He has said he will be the “grim reaper” for any legislation passed by the House of Representatives.

In doing this he is refusing to do the job he has sworn to do.  He is refusing to allow the Senate to legislate.  Thus granting control of one half of the legislative body of the United States to the president, contrary to the intent of the constitution.

The House of Representatives has recently passed bills to address the climate, gun violence, the internet, violence toward women, lowering the cost of drugs and the cost of health care among others, but Mr. McConnell says these are dead on arrival.  In the meantime the Senate has passed nothing!

It is time for the Republican senators to wake up and find some backbone.

Time to think of providing clean air and water to their children and grandchildren, lowering the cost of health care and medicines for all Americans, and providing equal protections under the law for everyone.

The United States was once the leader of the free world, but today in the areas of climate change, and international relations we have ceded that position to China and Russia.  And Republicans in congress blindly follow the lead of the man in the White House who consistently showers praise on the dictators of the world.
