Letter: The cost of not voting

To the Editor:

For the 84-86% of the voters who didn't think voting was important, in just a few weeks it will be time to pay the piper. Our new governor has just pulled off the biggest legalized theft job in the history of the state of Illinois. Our new gas tax. If you think it is just a $0.19 raise in the gas tax, you had better get your head out of the sand and begin to realize it's whole ramification.

Illinois is one of the few states that has a sales tax on gas so as tax goes up so does the sales tax. So your 19 cents is now what, 21 or 22 cents per gallon? Now, if you think about it, everything you put into your body (food)(drink) was transported to the store by trucks using fuel.

True diesel fuel didn't go up as much as gas but it did go up. The transportation company will pass the cost onto the store. The store will pass it on to the consumer, you. Everything you put on your body. The same thing. It will be passed onto you. And finally, gas is hauled to gas stations by truck. Yep, same story. And so, yes the gas tax is going up 19 cents a gallon.

So the sales tax will raise it another 2 or 3 cents. The transportation company will add another 2 or 3 cents and the store might add another penny for profit. So now your talking 25 or 26 cents a gallon raise. Aren't you glad you didn't vote ?
