Letters to the Editor

Letter: Strict constitutionalists

To the Editor:

Articles 1 and 2 of the Constitution enumerate the powers of the president and Congress. The framers gave the president few powers, with the exception being that he would be commander in chief and have the power to fill vacancies on the Supreme Court.

Section 8, Article 1, enumerates the legislative powers of Congress. Among the many powers are: Congress shall have power to regulate commerce with foreign nations ... to establish a uniform rule of naturalization ... to declare war ... to provide for calling forth the militia to execute the laws of the union, suppress insurrections and repel invasions.

Where are the strict constructionists in the Congress who were so vocal during the debate on the Second Amendment?
