U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, spoke out against the potential effect that a legal challenge to the Affordable Care Act could have on Illinois residents.

Underwood responded to the continuation of a lawsuit in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals to strike down the law. She argued that if the lawsuit were successful, it would throw the American health care system into chaos.

“We must honor our promise to safeguard access to quality, affordable health care and to protect people with preexisting conditions,” Underwood said. “It hasn’t been easy, and it’s going to continue to be a fight – President [Donald] Trump and Republicans are trying to deny these important protections ... but it’s a fight worth having.”

The congresswoman said that if the ACA were struck down, it could affect protections for more than 5 million Illinois residents with preexisting conditions. In addition, Underwood said, more than 600,000 residents could lose their health insurance coverage and about 91,000 young Illinoisans younger than 26 could lose the ability to stay on their parents’ insurance.

Underwood also touted legislation she’s introduced in this session of Congress. It includes bills to overturn an administration rule expanding short-term, limited-duration insurance, commonly known as “junk plans,” and one to expand eligibility for premium tax credits to consumers with incomes above 400% of the federal poverty level.
