Interim coroner: 35-year-old man found dead after kayaking in Crystal Lake

The body of a 35-year-old man was found Thursday afternoon in Crystal Lake, interim McHenry County Coroner John Miller confirmed Friday morning.

Miller said his office arrived at the scene at 1:50 p.m. Initial information indicates that the man had been kayaking.

His body was found facedown about 5 feet from shore, according to Miller and a news release from the Lakewood Police Department.

The Lakewood Police Department and Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded about 12:31 p.m. to a report of a possible drowning victim near the 1300 block of South Shore Drive, according to the release.

The man was found “just off the shoreline,” the release stated.

Crystal Lake officials tried lifesaving measures, and the man was taken to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.

A postmortem examination is scheduled for Saturday. The man’s name is being withheld pending the coroner’s findings and notification of the family.
