Jersey Mike’s Subs is coming to McHenry, the mayor has announced.
The sub shop plans to open in a vacant unit at 1787 Richmond Road, in the same shopping center as the Panera Bread, Hair Cuttery and Papa Saverio’s, McHenry Mayor Wayne Jett said in a social media post.
The unit previously housed Athletico, a physical therapy center.
Jersey Mike’s plans to renovate the 1,600-square-foot unit to accommodate the restaurant and is awaiting regular building and zoning approvals, said Ross Polerecky, the city’s community development director.
“They haven’t set an opening date or construction schedule yet,” Polerecky said. “They are just going through the general procedures. As soon as we get it back to them, they anticipate starting construction immediately.”
The restaurant won’t need any special approvals from the city’s planning and zoning commission or City Council, he said.
Polerecky said the city was happy to welcome the new business.
“We are just as excited as everyone else,” he said.
The chain was founded in New Jersey in 1956. Peter Cranco, now CEO of Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems, Inc, bought the business in the 1970s and began to franchise in the late 1980s, according to the company website.
There are more than 1,500 Jersey Mike’s open worldwide, including 1,585 in the U.S. An additional 135 are in development, according to the website.
The chain offers hot and cold subs, breakfast items and wraps, kids meals and catering, according to its website.
There are two Jersey Mike’s in McHenry County – one in Crystal Lake and one in Lake in the Hills.
