Eduardo Figueroa-Martinez has been in the McHenry County Jail since Dec. 29, 2017, when the vehicle he was driving struck a pole, causing 22-year-old Jose Luis Ortiz Reyes to be ejected from the vehicle, police said in a news release at the time.
On Wednesday, Figueroa-Martinez pleaded guilty to a Class 2 felony charge of aggravated driving under the influence. He faces between three and 14 years in prison because the crash resulted in a death.
Judge Michael Coppedge revoked Figueroa-Martinez’s bond after the plea was entered Wednesday, meaning the 22-year-old will remain at the McHenry County Jail until his Sept. 6 sentencing hearing.
The crash occurred about 12:25 a.m. in the 6900 block of Route 120, between Martin Road and East Wonder Lake roads.
Figueroa-Martinez was driving his 2013 Ford Fusion west on Route 120 when the vehicle left the road, struck a utility pole and ejected Ortiz Reyes from the car, McHenry police said at the time.
Both Figueroa-Martinez and Ortiz Reyes were taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry, where Ortiz Reyes later was pronounced dead. Autopsy results revealed Ortiz Reyes died from blunt force trauma to the chest and abdomen.
Figueroa-Martinez suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
