SWAT team responded after suspect held up at his home

A 20-year-old Lake in the Hills man was arrested Thursday for allegedly stealing $900, a TV and miscellaneous jewelry from a home on Hiawatha Drive on Wednesday, according to a release from the Lake in the Hills Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Cedar Street at 11:38 a.m. Thursday for a follow-up report of a suspect connected with the residential burglary.

When officers made contact with the suspect, Jesus Valdez of the 400 block of Cedar Street, he retreated to his residence. Officers secured the residence and requested assistance from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office’s multi-jurisdictional SWAT team, according to the release.

Citizens were advised to avoid the area of Hilltop Drive and Cedar Street in Lake in the Hills because of reported police activity, according to a Nixle alert sent at 4:33 p.m. by the Lake in the Hills Police Department.

About 5 p.m. Valdez exited the residence and surrendered without further incident. No other individuals were found inside the residence.

A second Nixle alert sent at 5:31 p.m. said the area is clear and all roadways are clear.

Valdez is being charged with residential burglary, criminal damage to property, possession of stolen property and resisting a peace officer. The most serious offense, residential burglary, is a Class 1 felony punishable by four to 15 years in prison.

Valdez is being held at the McHenry County Jail.
