High school sports roundup for Wednesday, Sept. 4

Marian Central's Christopher Ghita scored two first-half goals Wednesday to lead the Hurricanes to a 5-1 East Suburban Catholic Conference win over Nazareth Academy in Woodstock.

Dominik Drwila also scored in the first half for Marian (4-1, 1-0 ESCC), and Nicolas Iafigliola and Jonathan DePrey each scored after the break. Caleb Taylor made 14 saves with the Roadrunners' only goal coming on a penalty kick.

Ghita, DePrey, Nicolas Iafigliola and Nate Iafigliola had assists.

Crystal Lake Central 1, DeKalb 1: At DeKalb, Billy Cummings scored a penalty-kick goal with 24 minutes left for the Tigers (0-0-1) to earn a nonconference draw in their season opener. Joey Moore made eight saves for Central (0-0-1).

Crystal Lake South 1, Palatine 1: At the Wauconda Tournament, Tom Coughlin had a second-half goal as the Gators (2-1-1) came back to earn a draw against the Pirates. Carson Hill made nine saves for South.

McHenry 2, North Chicago 0: At the Wauconda Tournament, Jose Lira had a goal and an assist for the Warriors (2-1-1). Nate Reinhart scored McHenry's second goal, and Edwin Navas had an assist. Logan Freid made two saves.

Richmond-Burton 2, Marengo 0: At Marengo, the Rockets (3-3, 1-0) won their Kishwaukee River Conference opener with goals from Ethan Demers and Hugo Campos. Jacob Maldonado made five saves, and Liam Weck had an assist.

The Indians fell to 1-3 and 0-1 in the KRC.

Cary-Grove 3, Grant 0: At the Grant Tournament in Fox Lake, Mateo Nunez scored twice for the Trojans (3-0) in a win over the Bulldogs. Dario Gamboa and Sebastian Sproch had assists, and Sam Larsen made two saves.

Harvard 2, Vernon Hills 0: At the Grant Tournament, Manny Mercado and Danny Sanchez scored for the Hornets in a victory. Aldo Popoca made seven saves for Harvard (1-3), and Brian Albarran had an assist.

Woodstock 7, Harlem 0: At Woodstock, Mac Buckley and Kaleb Robey had two goals apiece for the Blue Streaks (6-0) in a nonconference victory. Victor Cazares, Eli Woodson and Denis Gjoni each scored once. Oscar Escorza had two assists, and Stephan Turskey made six saves.


Woodstock 2, Wauconda 0: At Woodstock, the Blue Streaks stayed undefeated with a 25-21, 25-21 nonconference victory over the Bulldogs. Emma Brand had six kills and three blocks for Woodstock (7-0). Ella Wicker had 15 digs and three aces, Hanna Berry had nine kills, and Sophie Wicker had 20 assists.

Cary-Grove 2, Grayslake Central 0: At Cary, Evynn Layshock had seven kills, and Lauren Passaglia had four blocks in a 25-14, 25-12 nonconference win for the Trojans (3-1). Jenna Splitt had 12 assists and Mia Soltis had 11 digs.


Crystal Lake Central 5, Grayslake Central 2: At Crystal Lake, the Tigers swept all three doubles matches in the nonconference dual meet to move to 3-0. Haley Benard won in straight sets at No. 3 singles.

Kenna Kessler and Emma Grindstaff (No. 1), Haley Steinberg and Olivia Johnson (No. 2), Ellyse Cruz and Lexi Holtkamp (No. 3) and Caroline Dayon and Lauren Fier (No. 4) won at doubles.

Rolling Meadows 4, Crystal Lake South 3: At Crystal Lake, Hannah Schuetzle and Anna Chang (No. 1) and Katie Rokusek and Jaden Appelhans (No. 2) won their doubles matches in a nonconference loss for the Gators (1-2). Lizzy Sudbrook had a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles.

Rockford Lutheran 3, Marengo 2: At Rockford, Ashtyn Martin picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles for the Indians. Rebekah Addis and Theckla Sweat lost only one game in a sweep at No. 3 doubles.

Kaneland 5, Huntley 2: At Maple Park, Kylie Phommasack and Michelle Barnvos won at No. 1 doubles for the Red Raiders in a nonconference loss. Talia Duffy and Alyssa West (No. 2 doubles) also won.

Woodstock 6, Round Lake 1: At Woodstock, the Blue Streaks improved to 2-1 with a nonconference win over the Panthers.

Lake Forest Academy 4, Cary-Grove 1: At Lake Forest, Kate Larry and Grace O'Malley (No. 3 doubles) had the only win, 2-6, 6-2, 12-10, for the Trojans.

Woodstock North 6, McHenry 1: At Woodstock, the Thunder swept all four doubles matches in a nonconference win. Ally Cullotta won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles for North (8-1), and Sophia Ferru won, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.


Johnsburg 186, Harvard 191: At Chapel Hill in McHenry, Johnsburg's Tyler Malueg and Mike Link tied for medalist honors with 41s for the Skyhawks in a Kishwaukee River Conference win. Cody Clauson and Davis Grons added 52s.

Hunter Gratz led the Hornets with a 46, followed by James Crout (47), Jake Chupich (48) and Caden Scott (50).

Dundee-Crown 161, Jacobs 164: At Bonnie Dundee in Carpentersville, D-C's Matt McQuillen and Jacobs' Jordan Stone shared medalist honors in the FVC dual, shooting 3-over 37s. Also scoring for the Chargers were Aidan Svec (41), Jake Russell (41) and Jake Zirlin (42) and Kyle Huber (42).

Andrew Rechtsteiner and Kyle Schutt both had 42s for Jacobs. Jason Seaholm, Richie Gross and Ryan Frantik had 43s.

Woodstock North co-op 183, Marengo 218: At Marengo Ridge, Woodstock North's Charlie Neff had the low round with a 45 in a KRC victory. Aidan Filetti, Luke Trewyn, Calvin Wormley and Brad Arnold each had 46s for North co-op.

Marian Central 181, St. Patrick 187: At Ridgemoor in Harwood Heights, Alex Gilmore shot a 41 to earn medalist honors for the Hurricanes in an ESCC win. Daniel Stumpf had a 46, and Sebastian Rennell and Bennett Arza had a 47.


Huntley 176, McHenry 185: At Boone Creek in Bull Valley, Huntley's Katie Matustik and McHenry's Sarah Fergus each fired 3-over 38s in an FVC win. Nina Shaffer had a 43, Molly Baker had a 46, and Lorelei Oomens and Allison Boroski added 49s for the Red Raiders.

Jocelyn Currie had a 47 for McHenry, Kelsey Morrison had a 48, and Carly Wolf and Sydney Shea had 52s.

Harvard 189, Johnsburg 193: At Chapel Hill in McHenry, Joelle McMillan shot a 43 for the Hornets in a KRC win. Emma Ackland had a 44, Jennah Brookner had a 48 and Julia Chupich had a 54.

Ellie Johnson and Gracie Berthoud had 44s to lead the Skyhawks. Hailey Bullamore had a 50, and Savannah Prouty had a 55.

Jacobs 186, Hampshire 195: At Randall Oaks in West Dundee, Jacobs' Lauren Kempf and Hampshire's Gianna Farinella tied for medalist honors with 40s in the FVC dual. Also scoring for Jacobs in the win were Roslyn Leitner (42), Jordan Miller (47) and Autumn Kovach (57).

Delaney Marcuccilli had a 46 for the Whip-Purs, Alexis Konajeski had a 53, and Julia Bachta had a 56.

Marian Central vs. Carmel: At Boone Creek, Lauren McNulty had a 41 and Ava Notaro a 45 for the Hurricanes, who don't have enough golfers for a full match. Carmel's Maria Stephens earned medalist honors with a 39.

Crystal Lake Central co-op 187, Prairie Ridge 198: At Turnberry in Lakewood, the Tigers picked up an FVC win against the Wolves. Elizabeth Tucker led Prairie Ridge with a 46, followed by Jo Gindorf (49), Katie Gilmore (50) and Alexis Baron (53).

Rockford Jefferson Mermaid Relays: At Rockford, McHenry finished fifth in the team's first meet of the season.

Third-place finishers included Melisa Nava, Morgan Donovan, Paige Bantner, Julia Finch, Andrea Avila, Kristina Robinson, Riley Tobin, Joley McDaniel and Mackenzie Cutler.

Claudia Quint and Grace Smith were fourth. Samantha Cutler and Emerson Simon were sixth.
