Motorists should expect congestion and road closures in the downtown Huntley area Saturday night because of the second annual Huntley Hootenanny Glow 5K.
Main and Coral streets will be closed starting at 6:30 p.m., and intersections along the 5K’s route will be closed as participants pass, according to a traffic alert from the Huntley Police Department.
The race begins at 7:15 p.m. and will start and end at the intersection of Coral and Church streets.
Runners will travel north on Church Street to the Algonquin Road bike path, follow the path to Main Street and travel west on Main Street until they reach the finish line.
Last year, about 1,800 people showed up for the unique event, which helped Huntley School District 158’s Education Foundation collect about $18,000 to benefit student scholarships and classroom grant initiatives.
This year, about 2,500 people are expected to participate.
Prizes will be given to the top male finisher, top female finisher, the “glowiest” participant and “glowiest” building, fence or yard along the race route.
After the race, a party will be held in the town square featuring a live DJ and food and activities provided by downtown Huntley businesses.
Huntley police are advising motorists to be on the lookout for pedestrians and consider taking alternate routes between 6 and 10 p.m. to avoid the downtown area.
