Letter: Don't change Columbus Day

To the Editor:

Columbus Day should, in fact, be celebrated and not renamed at all. Christopher Columbus was a colonist looking to find a better, more efficient trade route to the Indies. He did this by making his way to get approval by any country that was willing to fund the voyage he dreamed of.

Eventually, Spain finally agreed and funded Columbus’s voyage which ended up taking him to the “New World.” By doing this, he would become one of the most inspiring, most known individuals to ever step foot on earth. So, one reason Columbus should still be celebrated to this day is because, without him, we wouldn’t be here today. For example, Columbus brought the new continent to the attention of many Europeans.

This clearly means that Columbus paved the way for modern-day living. Without him making his way to America, the Europeans would have never been influenced. This means that the U.S. would have never been settled on, which might’ve ended up in the country to be named something else, taken over by many different people and have a totally different outcome on history.

Another reason why Columbus Day should still be celebrated is because he was never doing anything bad as people say. For example, Columbus was living in a time where slaving and criminal activity like rape, stealing, and cannibalism was very normal. In this case, Columbus did use the Native people as slaves, not all of them but only some of them. He made sure they were promised good life in Spain and made allies with the Natives also.

The fact that people judge Columbus for what he did in the 15th century is utterly disgusting. He clearly was doing what anyone of us would do if we were in his shoes during that time.

He especially risked his life to eventually discover this land that we live on to this day. Sailing the ocean and going somewhere where no one had ever been before is an extremely big accomplishment that should not only be remembered but also celebrated for the rest of time.
