An Algonquin man is due in court next week on charges alleging that he provided his girlfriend with the dose of cocaine that later killed her.

Algonquin police arrested Gregory Galluzzo at 6:55 p.m. Friday, according to a criminal complaint filed in McHenry County court. He faces felony charges of drug-included homicide and possession of a controlled substance in connection with the death of Barbara Duelfer.

Police alleged that Galluzzo, 59, of the 100 block of Jefferson Street, delivered cocaine to Duelfer on June 16. He’s also accused of possessing more than a gram of cocaine the day officers arrested him, according to the complaint.

Algonquin Deputy Police Chief Ryan Markham confirmed Tuesday that Galluzzo and Duelfer were in a relationship and shared a home.

The case began as a death investigation, but the Illinois State Police North Central Narcotics Task Force stepped in to assist when investigators realized drugs were involved, Markham said.

Should Galluzzo be convicted of the most serious charge, drug-induced homicide, he could be sentenced to between six and 30 years in prison. McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge appointed the the public defender’s office Tuesday to represent Galluzzo.

Galluzzo remained at the McHenry County Jail on Tuesday evening on a $200,000 bond. He would need to post $20,000 bail to be released. His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 26.
