Missing Island Lake teen found dead near Slocum Lake

The body of a missing teenager has been found.

Abe Gonzalez, 17, was found dead Friday morning in a swampy area near Slocum Lake, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

“Since assuming investigative duties in the search for the missing teen, members of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office have spent hundreds of man hours in the search for Gonzalez,” Lake County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Chris Covelli said. “Gonzalez was located today by a search party of sheriff’s detectives and sheriff’s auxiliary deputies.”

Deputies resumed a days-long search for the teen at dawn Friday and found a body about 10:45 a.m. near Slocum Lake.

The Lake County coroner was expected to perform an autopsy Friday afternoon, Covelli said.

Deputies found the body submerged in about a foot of icy water in a swampy area near the lake.

“It took some time to recover the body due to treacherous ground conditions and frigid water,” Covelli said. “The scene didn’t reveal any indication of foul play.”

The recovery was complete about 1 p.m.

Gonzalez was seen by his father walking out the front door of his home in Island Lake on Nov. 1 wearing a gray hoodie, blue jeans and white shoes. He last was seen walking west on Maple Avenue in unincorporated Lake County, police have said.

According to the Island Lake Police Department’s Facebook page, Gonzalez said he was going out to get some fresh air. Later that evening, Gonzalez was seen at a home in the 26000 block of Morey Street attending a party in unincorporated Lake County.

He then was seen leaving that house on foot by himself about midnight Nov. 2. Gonzalez’s father notified Island Lake police of his son’s disappearance at 6:35 p.m. Nov. 2 after Gonzalez failed to return home.

A full canvass of the neighborhood was conducted, and police interviewed those who had been with Gonzalez earlier, as well. Foot patrols also were conducted, police said.

Island Lake police then requested assistance from the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

The crash assistance team used drones to search wooded and open field areas with no results. Illinois/Wisconsin search and rescue dogs also assisted in the search, arriving later Sunday afternoon.

Sonar technicians also scanned Slocum Lake.

The Wauconda Police Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office also assisted Island Lake police in the investigation.
