Woodstock’s girls basketball season opener was postponed Monday after five team members were injured in a car crash Sunday.
The players had watched a group of eighth grade girls play in a tournament in Burlington, where the Blue Streaks were set to open their season in a tournament Monday.
First-year Woodstock coach Rick Peterson said there were no serious injuries but that some of the girls were bruised and may have some whiplash-like symptoms.
Only senior Juel Mecklenburg was taken to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital on Sunday night. Mecklenburg was treated and later released, Peterson said.
“It was pretty emotional last night,” Peterson said. “Everybody was coming to see Juel. They were pretty sore; they didn’t go to school today.”
Peterson said Monday’s game with Geneva was rescheduled for Wednesday as to not disrupt the tournament schedule. The Streaks will play DeKalb on Tuesday at Burlington Central.
Woodstock practiced after school Monday, and some of the injured players visited their teammates for a few minutes. Peterson was uncertain which players would be up to playing Tuesday.
“Juel will not play; Marren Dougherty, Erin Lockwood and Emma O’Brien may not play,” Peterson said. “They’re very mentally shaken up by this. It was a close call. They’re really close friends, and they really bond together well.”
Celia Tafoya was the other player in the accident.
