Cary police looking for man who broke into electronics store, made off with empty boxes

Investigators with the Cary Police Department are looking for a man who broke into Cary Grove Computers last weekend, despite failing to net an expensive haul.

Police officers at 6 a.m. responded to the store, which sells refurbished Apple products and offers computer repair services, on Sunday. When they arrived at the business, 115 E. Main St., officers saw broken glass from a front entrance door, which is located on the west side of the business.

The man took five empty Apple iPad boxes from the store. Nothing else was stolen, Deputy Chief Scott Naydenoff said.

“I highly doubt they knew the boxes were empty,” Naydenoff said.

Naydenoff said there have been no other similar incidents in the area of which the department is aware.

Video surveillance footage showed a male of an unspecified age range with a short beard wearing a knit hat, camouflage-print jacket, jeans and gloves using a crowbar to break the window and enter the building. The burglar was driving a full-sized white Ford van, police said.

“Obviously, they went to that business for a purpose, which would raise my suspicion that other businesses dealing with electronics should be aware that this occurred,” Naydenoff said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Cary Police Department at 847-639-2341 or Cary-Grove Crime Stoppers at 800-762-7876.
