Letter: Helping others

To the Editor:

Where are the visionary leaders? Vision brought this land to life. It was organized, communal vision which conceived our constitution.

Vision laid the foundation for the evolution of the social service network in McHenry County which promotes the health and well-being of all our residents.

Any human institution needs sustained attention and maintenance. Historically, this county is a giving one. Families banded together to birth Pioneer Center. Voters taxed themselves for mental health services, a skilled nursing facility that addresses the needs of our residents (Valley Hi); and services for our older adults (Senior Tax). With this historical context, why would our elected representatives ignore the wishes of the people in the name of reduced real estate taxes?

Any student of Springfield and the state constitution knows the real issue is the abdication of the state legislature to properly fund the education of our children, leaving the burden to local property owners.

Jack Franks knows this because I, and many others, have reminded him and our other representatives of this constitutionally embedded fact. Do not cry for our lost children, insist that the Department of Children and Family Services’ caseloads are humanly manageable.

Do not rally to the cries of lower taxes if this means our children are not properly provided for.

The preventable death of one child in this county is worth our tax dollars going to suicide prevention. Prisons do not treat the opioid crisis, people do, by innovative programs that stop our children from ever needing to escape what should be a quality life in this county.

Every board member of every agency in this county should be standing up and saying we need the money to provide necessary and adequate services for our children, their parents and their grandparents.

Once upon a time, McHenry County was the innovative leader in providing services for our most vulnerable residents. We led the state in seeking federal dollars to ensure a quality of life, which attracted other state residents to move here because of the services.

Those that cry tax savings are false prophets. Beware.
