Letter: No sense to District 47's fence plan at Glacier Ridge

To the Editor:

Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47 is at it again! Board members voted to approve an unnecessary chain-link fence to surround Glacier Ridge Elementary at a minimum cost of $50,000, not to mention the cost of multiple surveys and the cost to remove trees that just happen to fall on the approved fence line.

Not only is the District 47 board using tax money to chop down beautiful, mature trees, but they also are robbing the environment of the benefits the trees provide us.

I thought we were teaching students the importance of taking care of our environment. Apparently not.

I have lived in Crystal Lake for 47 years. For 19 years, since Glacier Ridge was built, my yard has backed up to the playground. I have never witnessed a situation where a fence would be deemed necessary, nor has the board proved its case for the fence.

Nearby Woods Creek Elementary’s playground borders a busy road, and the wooded area behind the school poses a safety risk. No fence there. Even while a board member was principal there.

Glacier Ridge is surrounded by 25 homes. Sixteen of those homes already have a fence.

So we are paying to install a fence in front of a fence. Really? When school is out, many families enjoy the playground at the school, as they should.

They will no longer be able to do that if the gate is locked.

If the gate is left unlocked, then a board that doesn’t want dogs on school property has now just built a dog park.

Either way, one thing is guaranteed: Your taxes will go up, yet again, to subsidize the district’s need to waste money on another unnecessary project.

And when District 47 approves fences at the other 11 schools, your taxes will go up even more.

There are seven people in charge of millions of dollars, paid by thousands of taxpayers with little to no oversight. It’s time to pay closer attention to what District 47 is doing with your tax money.
