To the Editor:
I am disgusted by the lack of respect and empathy shown by the male judicial candidates for McHenry County Subcircuit 3. Neither Justin Hansen nor Don Brewer have defended Mary McClellan as she has been attacked openly and called a derogatory slur by Robert Hanlon and former State Rep. Cal Skinner’s blog.
I am further disappointed in the Northwest Herald’s decision to run a poll highlighting the use of the slur, further publicizing this hateful language. The decision by Hansen and Brewer to stay silent is an indication of their true character. Instead of defending Mary and having the courage to speak out against vile rhetoric, they have chosen to stay silent and clearly hope to benefit from this public shaming.
Mary McClellan was a single mother who attended law school at night to earn her degree. She has worked hard to get to this point in her career, even serving as the McHenry County clerk, but all of her hard work has been overlooked and her long upstanding history has been reduced to a single judgement according to someone else’s idea of morality.
Certainly, there was no mention of the fact that she didn’t mysteriously become a single mother, there was a man involved as well, but because he isn’t running against Hansen or Brewer, he isn’t branded with the scarlet “W.”
As a man in McHenry County, whose wife had our son before we were married, I am sickened and saddened by the lack of moral character displayed by Justin Hansen and Don Brewer.
Attempting to benefit from the public shaming of your opponent is politics at its worst. The apathy, cowardice, and contempt demonstrated by Hansen and Brewer is exactly why they should not be considered for a judgeship in McHenry County.
