WOODSTOCK - Outgoing McHenry County Chairman Bill LeFew on Friday endorsed State Rep. Mike Tryon to take over party leadership.
“For me, Mike Tryon would be the number one candidate, and if Mike’s interested, that’s who I am going to support,” LeFew said in an interview.
“I was privileged to work with Mike when he was County Board chairman, here,” LeFew continued. “He’s a calm individual, very people oriented and he would be a great asset. He’d have my 100 percent support.”
Tryon, a Crystal Lake Republican, for his part, said he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of making a bid for the party chairmanship. He added that he would first like to meet with LeFew to learn more about the position before making a decision.
“Certainly it’s something I have to calculate, whether I can do it,” Tryon said. “Am I interested? The answer would be I am.”
LeFew announced Thursday night that after six years at the party helm, he plans on stepping down as party chair. He emphasized on Friday that he will retain his post as McHenry County treasurer, and in fact plans to run for re-election to that seat in 2010.
At the same time, LeFew said he would not have run for a re-election bid to the chairmanship at the next McHenry County Republican meeting.
“There’s not enough hours in the day,” he said. “I’m not retiring out of politics at all: I plan on staying active and taking good care of candidates.
“I just won’t be doing it as chairman.”
