Campaign fights for kids' care

WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Rep. Donald Manzullo is being targeted by two other congressmen as a vital vote in overriding President Bush’s veto of the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act.

U.S. Reps. Diana DeGette of Colorado, vice chairwoman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, and Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, chief deputy whip, are imploring Manzullo and fellow Illinois Congressmen Peter Roskam, Jerry Weller, Judy Biggert, Dennis Hastert and Tim Johnson to reverse course Wednesday and override the reauthorization act – that would mean health care for 4 million more American children in need, including 154,000 more kids in Illinois.

Without the support of Manzullo, Roskam, Weller, Biggert, Hastert and Johnson, the U.S. House passed the latest version the bipartisan Children's Health Act, which was revised in response to the president’s first veto of the bill and included language to address concerns about undocumented immigrants and adults and children from high-income families benefiting from the program.
