Ready for new garbage service

By TOM MUSICK - tmusick@nwherald.com

HUNTLEY – Treat your new garbage toter well. It has had a busy few weeks.

The brown, 95-gallon toters were made in California, hauled across the country, and stacked in the Union Special parking lot along Route 47 before finding their new homes.

MDC Environmental Services expects to distribute all of the toters by the end of the week, said Greg York, the company’s general manager.

The company’s contract as the village’s only waste-hauler for residences outside of Sun City starts Monday.

“We have the trucks and the employees to do it,” York said. “The distribution of the carts is probably the biggest challenge.

“Of course, the weather hasn’t really aided us.”

Village officials selected MDC last year for the municipality’s waste-hauling contract and started an information campaign to make residents aware of the changes.

Village leaders said a single waste-hauler system offered a cheaper, more-efficient alternative to the former system that featured a handful of companies.

Each resident has or will receive a 95-gallon toter for garbage and a 65-gallon cart for recyclables, York said.

He said the company would continue to respond to individuals who wish to trade larger toters for smaller ones.

“It’s going to take us a couple of weeks to sort out all of those individual requests,” York said. “We’re working on those requests now, but it’s going to take a little longer.”

Village Manager Carl Tomaso asked residents for their patience as the new program starts.

Residents ages 55 and older may continue to sign up for a senior discount at the Huntley Municipal Complex, 10987 Main St.

“Be patient,” Tomaso said. “If there are wrinkles, if there are situations that occur, we will work through them.”
