Waterways at flood level
By NORTHWEST HERALD
The Fox River and Chain O’Lakes are at flood stage this afternoon in Fox Lake and south of the McHenry dam; and Algonquin is under a flood warning.
The lower Fox River was about 11 inches above flood stage at 1:30 p.m., according to a U.S. Geological Survey Web site. Fox Lake was just over an inch above flood stage at 2 p.m.
In Algonquin, water levels were about an inch below flood stage at 10:15 a.m. One to two inches of rain were expected, according to the National Weather Service.
Today’s heavy rainfall over nearly saturated ground may create flooding problems along rivers and streams; and people in flood-prone locations should be prepared to take action, the agency warns.
Following a foggy morning with periodic thunderstorms, a slight risk for severe thunderstorms continues this afternoon, meteorologist Casey Sullivan said.
A front warms it up to the 50s close to sunset, Sullivan said.
Because of high-water conditions, the Fox Waterway Agency has declared the entire Fox River Chain O’ Lakes system a “no-wake” zone.
The Chicago Airport System reported that more than 450 flights at O’Hare International Airport have been canceled and delays stretch up to two hours. Midway Airport reports delays averaging 45 minutes.
