Boil order in effect for parts of Crystal Lake

CRYSTAL LAKE – Monday’s downed power line caused a boil order to go into effect for 295 residences in unincorporated Crystal Lake.

The boil order affects the area from Route 31 to Pingree Road and Route 14 to Three Oaks Road. It was issued Tuesday morning as a precaution by T.P. Matthews, who controls the water system in the area, and will continue through Wednesday. Matthews said the boil order pertains only to drinking water. He expects the order to be lifted by tonight.

Fox Valley Helping Paws opens surgery room

WOODSTOCK – Starting today, the Fox Valley Helping Paws animal shelter will open a surgery room to spay and neuter the dogs and cats that it houses.

Eventually, the shelter’s goal is to provide a low-cost spay and neuter option for local pet owners, said Cindy Gaffney, coordinator of the shelter’s Trap-Neuter-Return program for feral cats.

“We’re taking little baby steps right now,” Gaffney said. “We hope through donations and grants to be able to open it up to other shelters in the area. Once we get that covered, [we’ll open] to the public for low-cost neuter and spay.”

Gaffney said the in-house surgery program would help cut down on driving time for shelter volunteers. Surgeries other than castrations and spays will continue to be performed at area veterinary clinics, Gaffney said.

Helping Paws houses about 30 dogs, 100 adult cats, and 150, Gaffney said. The nonprofit organization moved into a new building at 2500 Harding Lane in Woodstock in 2006, Gaffney said.  The new $20,000 surgery room had been a lifelong dream of former Helping Paws President Joanne Anderson, who died after a battle with cancer this year, Gaffney said.

Shelter employees are looking for volunteers to walk dogs at 7 p.m. each night. To participate, show up at the shelter at 7 p.m. on any night or stop by early in the day to fill out an application.
