Boy in serious condition after motorcycle crash in McHenry

By JIM BUTTS - jbutts@nwherald.com

McHENRY – An 11-year-old was listed in serious condition Thursday at Lutheran General Hospital after being struck by a car while riding a motorcycle with his father.

The boy first was taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry on Wednesday evening before being flown to Lutheran General. Neither he nor his father, 39-year-old Randy J. Gerhke of McHenry was wearing a helmet, McHenry Sgt. Robert Lumber said.

It also was suspected that Gerhke did not have a motorcycle license, he said.

The pair were traveling east on Pearl Street when they tried to cross Riverside Drive at a four-way stop but were hit by a red Ford Focus whose driver had run a stop sign, Lumber said.

The Focus, driven by Heidi L. Yates, 35, of Crystal Lake, then struck a minivan. Yates was charged with disobeying a stop sign.
