FOX RIVER GROVE – A 9-year-old and 14-year-old have been charged with allegedly trashing a home and setting it on fire Sunday.

Police said the boys were seen outside the fire at 2202 Evergreen Avenue and told witnesses they were trying to get cats out of them home.

The Illinois State Fire Marshall found that two separate fires started within the home. Also, computer monitors inside the home were struck with a hammer, a can of paint was used to damage the walls and carpeting and various items were taken from the home by the offenders.

Police said both children confessed to entering the home without permission to take money, then started the fires. Both were charged with residential arson, residential burglary, criminal damage to property and theft. The 14-year-old was transported to the Kane County Detention Facility and the 9-year-old was released to his parents.
