Alleged burglar leads police on car pursuit
LAKE IN THE HILLS – A 23-year-old man and 16-year-old boy are in police custody after trying to steal more than $20,000 worth of cell phones from a Randall Road business, police said.
Police arrested Jason T. Clark, 23, of 16901 S. Woods St., Hazelcrest, after a car chase that stretched from Lake in the Hills to Interstate 90 early Sunday, police said in a news release. The 16-year-old juvenile, also from Hazelcrest, fled from police on foot before being arrested, police said.
Lake in the Hills Police were dispatched at 2:24 a.m. Sunday to the Verizon Wireless store at 290 N. Randall Road, Lake in the Hills, for a possible burglary in progress.
While officers were responding to the scene, they were told that two individuals had forced entry into the store and were preparing to leave. When officers arrived, the juvenile suspect fled east on foot while a second suspect was getting into a silver Ford Taurus, police said.
Police took the juvenile into custody after a short foot pursuit. The second suspect fled police by driving south on Randall Road into Algonquin.
Within minutes of the burglary, the vehicle’s description was relayed to surrounding departments. Algonquin police spotted the car heading east on Bunker Hill Drive and tried to pull it over, police said.
The car did not stop, instead driving onto I-90 from the Route 47 entry ramp. The pursuit ended when the car no longer was drivable because of damage incurred during the pursuit, police said.
Algonquin police arrested the driver, Clark, on the I-90 Tollway west of Barrington Road. He was turned over later to Lake in the Hills police. Officers recovered about 90 cellular telephones worth more than $20,000 from the Taurus.
Clark and the 16-year-old boy both were charged with resisting a peace officer, burglary and theft of over $300, all felonies. Clark also was charged with traffic violations, including aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude, a felony, police said.
Clark was take to the McHenry County Jail to await bond court. The juvenile was taken to Kane County Juvenile Detention Center in St. Charles, police said.
