A sagging economy doesn’t have to equate with a flabby appearance. With numerous smaller, more affordable fitness centers popping up around the county, it’s possible to keep that New Year’s resolution to stay in shape.
Low-frills, more budget-friendly centers that are close to home have thousands of residents realizing that they still can afford club fitness regimens.
“The economy is tough. Being able to provide it at such a low price – people don’t have to give up their memberships,’’ said Emilie McClughen, director of marketing for Cardinal Fitness. “We feel very lucky we can provide a great service for $19.95 [a month].’’
Members typically don’t have far to drive, which makes it easier for them to fit in their daily workout, she said.
“We try to put our clubs in the neighborhood where people live and work,’’ McClughen said, adding that in McHenry County there are clubs in Woodstock, Crystal Lake, McHenry and Cary. “It’s a family fitness center, and I think people of all ages feel comfortable here. Typically a gym environment is intimidating. We want people to feel comfortable.’’
Helping their members stay healthy is the goal, she said.
“Our biggest point of difference is we stress customer service,’’ McClughen said. “To us, it’s about our customers’ health. Make it affordable for people to come in and work out and stay healthy.’’
At Anytime Fitness in Lakemoor, owner Rick Noelte keeps the membership number reasonable, he said.
“We’re a private club with a smaller membership base. When people come in, they’re able to come in and get their workout done,’’ Noelte said. “We try to focus on how many members should we have to keep the club enjoyable. Our niche is more of an adult-focused center.’’
Members get a customized workout program that includes a strength test and specific exercises to perform.
The club’s hours are true to its name, with members able to workout 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Noelte said, adding that members receive keys to let themselves in.
“It’s close to home, and it’s easy to get your 30-minute workout in,’’ he said.
The club attracts members from McHenry, Johnsburg, Fox Lake and Wauconda.
Similar small clubs are located throughout McHenry County. Typically the amenities they offer are more limited to free weights and resistance machines, and sometimes classes. Unlike larger lifestyle centers, they often don’t include locker room and shower facilities.
