Board member reflects on challenges, lessons as he exits D2

RICHMOND – In the time that Mike Gullifor served as a school board member, he worked with more than 15 administrators, 12 different board members and three district superintendents.

In 2000 he watched Richmond District 11 and Spring Grove District 13 consolidate to form Nippersink District 2. In the years that followed he was among the board members who guided the district out of nearly $3 million in debt. But through it all, his colleagues say he never forgot the importance of humility and listening.

"He was always very insightful, very tactful and professional ... with fellow board members, administration and anyone I ever saw him interact with," said Patty Anderson, District 2  board president.

Gullifor, of Spring Grove, resigned from the board in December because his day job will require more traveling.

As he reflected on the five years he spent on the school board and his service on District 13 in the late 1990s, he recalled his original motivation for serving.

"You see a situation where you believe you can help, ... and you just step in and do it," Gullifor said.

When the district faced debt, Gullifor said his primary focus was on the education, not just the dollar signs.

"While the financial thing was good, I think the fact that we didn't significantly compromise academic achievement is probably the big story to me," he said.

Colleagues recognized that dedication in his handling of the situation.

"Through the budget, going through negotiations, he has been very much the backbone of the board," Anderson said.

Gullifor lives in Spring Grove with his wife, Jody. They have two grown sons.

The board is seeking a replacement for Gullifor. The new board member will serve through April 2011 and will be appointed by the board.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter and have lived in the district for at least one year. To apply, submit a letter of interest that includes education, work history and civic involvement by Jan. 10 to the district offices. Applications should be addressed to Patricia Anderson, board president, Nippersink School District 2, 10006 Main St., Richmond.
