Health officials talk pet limits

By KEVIN P. CRAVER - kcraver@nwherald.com

The McHenry County Animal Control Advisory Committee will meet Wednesday night to discuss whether the county should limit the number of animals that residents can own.

Committee members originally planned to meet on the matter Dec. 3, but they postponed the meeting because of bad weather.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at McHenry County Animal Control and Adoption Center, 100 N. Virginia St., Crystal Lake.

A number of municipal governments in the county already have limits that vary in strictness.

Algonquin, Johnsburg and Marengo limit residents to four domestic animals, while Lakewood restricts residents to up to four dogs and cats.

Huntley limits residents to three domestic animals, while Cary and Fox River Grove maintain a limit of three dogs, with no limit on cats.

A number of the county’s larger cities, such as Crystal Lake, McHenry and Woodstock, do not have limits on pets.

Other governments with no limits include Harvard, Lakemoor, Richmond and Spring Grove.

Lake, Kane and Boone counties have different limits on pet ownership.

Cook County does not and leaves such decisions to municipal governments.
