Man uninjured after driving car into Fox River
PORT BARRINGTON – A Chicago man who drove a car into the Fox River late Tuesday has been charged with failure to use due care.
Lukasz Zulewski, 25, was also charged with driving without insurance.
Emergency crews were dispatched at 10:16 p.m. to Rawson Bridge Road just east of Beachway Street where the Infiniti sedan Zulewski had been driving was almost completely submerged in the water, said Sgt. Steve Schmitt of the McHenry County Sheriff's Department.
Only part of the roof was visible, he said.
"The fire department used a bucket and went out over the river," Schmitt said. "They had to break the sun roof and hook it that way."
He said that Zulewski's car went in the water where the guardrail ends, where there is about 10 feet between the roadway and the river.
"He claims his headlight went out mysteriously," Schmitt said. "At that point there was another car approaching him and he drove onto the shoulder."
Zulewski was able to get out of the car before it slid all the way into the water, and was not injured, Schmitt said.
Drugs and alcohol were not a factor, he said.
