Winter storm fizzles, but roads are still icy
By Northwest Herald
That wasn't so bad, but there's more winter weather on the way.
A blizzard warning issued for this morning was canceled and replaced with a blizzard watch as another storm was expected to move in Wednesday afternoon. That, too, was canceled, although 2 to 5 inches of snow is still in the forecast by early Wednesday evening and gusts between 30 and 40 mph are possible.
Although between one and three inches of snow did fall in some areas last night, there have been no reports of school closings in McHenry County. However, there are numerous reports of minor car crashes and vehicles that have gone into ditches.
Nathan Marsili, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said that cold temperatures are on their way in.
"The temperature in Dubuque [Iowa] is already only 3 degrees," he said.
Temperatures are expected to drop throughout the day, holding between 0 and 5 degrees, Marsili said.
Wednesday morning, temperatures could be about -2 to -4 degrees before warming up slightly during the day.
Thursday morning could start with temperature near -8 degrees with a high near zero. The mercury will drop to about -10 to -15 degrees early Friday before warming up with a high during the day in the single digits, said meteorologist Andrew Krein said.
In addition to the cold, there also could be strong winds, blowing and drifting snow, and very low visibility, he said.
The McHenry County Board canceled one committee meeting and rescheduled another set for this morning because of the impending weather.
Any further cancellations or closures will be posted on the county’s Web site, www.co.mchenry.il.us.
