What makes McHenry County special

By Jason Schaumburg

Technology is turning us into a global community.

Seemingly every day, a new technology surfaces that makes disseminating information or consuming information easier and faster.

These days, you can get updates on McHenry County news from the Northwest Herald through Twitter, Facebook or at NWHerald.com, on a desktop computer, laptop computer, or mobile phone, such as an iPhone or Blackberry.

It’s now easy to reconnect and communicate with that long, lost friend who moved to California, or that high school sweetheart now living in Nashville, Tenn.

However, in editing this year’s Progress section – My McHenry County – it became clear that nothing can replace the sense of community you feel by being involved where you live.

We asked you what made your community special. The overwhelming response was people, the individuals that comprise your neighborhoods, your social clubs, your leadership circles.

The stories at nwherald.com/mymchenrycounty contain stories about the people, places and things that make your hometown special.

Stories about a 13-year-old boy in Huntley writing a book about the village’s history, or the couple opening a new bed-and-breakfast in Woodstock illustrate how a community can captivate individuals.

Stories about people who have lived their whole life in one place show you the appeal of small-town atmospheres.

And stories of little-known places like the Liquid Blues Bar in Woodstock or the Foxhole Tap and Pizzeria in McHenry demonstrate the importance of having places to gather.

Most importantly, however, are your stories. Each of the sections in My McHenry County contain essays from you about why you like – in most cases, love – where you live.

Friendships have formed, memories have been made and lives have been touched in McHenry County, and we appreciate you sharing those examples with us.

So, take a seat, sip some coffee, and read all about what makes McHenry County special.
