Marengo man charged in fatal 2008 accident
WOODSTOCK – A 46-year-old Marengo man is expected to be arraigned Wednesday for allegedly driving drunk during an accident that ultimately killed a 77-year-old Garden Prairie man.
Daniel Bending, of 548 Seventh Circle, was indicted Feb. 25 on two charges of aggravated driving under the influence.
Bending allegedly hit Leonard E. Anderson, who had parked his semi in the 1900 block of East Grant Highway, said Sgt. Rodney Riley of the Marengo Police Department. Police were called at 8:50 p.m. April 18, 2008.
“He was walking across the street from getting a cup of coffee [at a convenience store] when he was struck,” Bending said.
Anderson died May 11.
Bending had been charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence shortly after the accident, but prosecutors dropped that charge May 8 to pursue felony charges, Riley said.
Bending remained in McHenry County Jail on Friday, unable to post 10 percent of his $40,000 bail.
