In an eight-way race for three open spots on the City Council, voters Tuesday sided with veteran council members Jeffrey Thorsen and Ralph Dawson. Carolyn Schofield, who has served on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission for 10 years, also was elected to the council. It was Schofield who tallied the most votes of all the candidates in the crowded field. She had 1,360 votes, according to unofficial election results. Schofield said she was thrilled. “It has been exhausting, but I’m really happy,” she said. Schofield said she would focus on economic development in Crystal Lake and continue with efforts that already were under way to attract businesses to the area. She also wants to “listen to the public” and bring their thoughts and ideas to the City Council. Thorsen came in right behind Schofield with 1,313 votes. Thorsen has been on the City Council for a decade and said he planned to hone in on development and redevelopment issues in Crystal Lake. “We have some unique opportunities here that we need to make work for us, even in light of the current economic situation,” he said. Dawson got 1,299 votes and the final open council seat. Dawson, like his peers, will keep on with economic development matters, including bringing new businesses to the region, which he has been instrumental in for many years. Both Dawson and Thorsen said they were looking forward to working with Schofield on the City Council. “I’m very excited,” Thorsen said. “I’m sure she’ll take the job in hand and continue with the great work she had done for Planning and Zoning.” Schofield will bring a “new perspective” to the council, Dawson said. David Goss, another incumbent, lost his re-election bid. He led the rest of the unsuccessful candidates with 721 votes. >> Click for more election coverage |
