Less than 16 percent
of voters cast ballots

About five precincts needed more ballots printed, but overall voter turnout in McHenry County was low – less than 16 percent.

County Clerk Katherine Schultz ordered ballots for 35 percent of registered voters, but precinct workers in Greenwood, Coral, McHenry, Richmond and Seneca townships asked to have more printed, Schultz said.

“In some areas, you had some turnout,” Schultz said. “... I don’t know what you do to get people to vote.”

About 15.8 percent of the 200,853 registered voters cast ballots Tuesday, Schultz said. That includes 1,750 early votes, 850 absentee ballots, and six grace votes, which are cast at registration.

Tuesday’s turnout was lower than the April 2007 consolidated election, when about 17.09 percent of the 188,534 registered voters cast ballots. Last year, the February “Super Tuesday” primary election saw a 34.62 percent turnout, and the November election had a 70.22 percent turnout, but both of those included presidential races.
