Shepley to hit path for CL Bike with the Mayor event

CRYSTAL LAKE – Mayor Aaron Shepley plans to get out and ride his bicycle this weekend and is encouraging all to join him.

The first Bike with the Mayor event will start at 10 a.m. Saturday. The event will begin at City Hall, 100 W. Woodstock St. For Shepley, an avid cyclist, the ride is all about having a good time.

If it goes well, plans are to make the ride an annual event.

“I love biking,” Shepley said. “This is going to be a ride for camaraderie and fellowship.”

Sponsored by the Crystal Lake Clean Air Counts Committee, the event will promote bicycling as an alternative form of transportation and bring attention to the city’s bike path network.

“The larger purpose is to increase awareness of bicycle paths and enthusiasm for bicycling,” said Steve Fuller, a member of the Clean Air Counts Committee.

Fuller said another goal was to get people to “think globally and act locally” when it comes to environmental issues. He called the Bike with the Mayor event “a step in the right direction.”

In addition to the ride, which will begin at 10:30 a.m., there will be a bike rodeo for children age 6 and older.

Information from the McHenry County Bicycle Advocates and the McHenry County Conservation District Prairie Safety Watch will be available. And the first 100 participants will receive free bike reflectors.

Shepley reminded those planning to join the ride to bring a helmet.
