Island Lake student contracts swine flu

ISLAND LAKE — A 10-year-old boy at an Island Lake school has a confirmed case of swine flu.

District 118 Superintendent Daniel Coles posted a message on the district’s Web site stating that the student, who attends Cotton Creek School, was diagnosed with H1N1.

Leslie Piotrowski, Lake County Department of Health spokeswoman, said the boy, who’s an Island Lake resident, was not hospitalized.

Officials haven’t interviewed the family yet, so it is unclear how he contacted the flu or if any of his family members were infected, Piotrowski added.

The kindergarten through fifth grade school will not be closed as result of the case.

District officials ask that students who are sick stay home. They also urge anyone with a temperature higher than 100 degrees in combination with a cough or sore throat to see a doctor.

According to information on the Illinois Department of Health Web site, 22 cases of swine flu have been confirmed in Lake County, which is where Cotton Creek School is. Three cases have been confirmed in McHenry County.
