R-B seniors carry on high standards
RICHMOND – Members of the Richmond-Burton Community High School Class of 2009 left with more than their diplomas after Sunday’s commencement ceremony.
They left with the commendation of being part of a record-breaking academic and athletic class.
“This class consists of an extraordinary and remarkable group of students,’’ Richmond Burton Superintendent Dan Oest told the crowd gathered at the school’s athletic field, as planes flew over head to help mark the celebration.
Among the graduates, he said, are 26 Illinois State Scholars, 50 Presidential Academic Scholars and one National Merit Scholarship Finalist.
“Trust me when I say [that] in comparison, these numbers and achievements are staggering,’’ Oest said. “Students, job well done.’’
Class President Lauren Ribando echoed those sentiments.
“I believe that the class of 2009 has something special,’’ she said, referring to the class as school record-breakers.
“We are music-lovers, future problem-solvers, volunteers, and most of all, friends,” Ribando said. “I’ve been pushed to reach high standards by being part of this class. I’m not sure how the school has affected my life, but I’m certainly about to find out.’’
Valedictorian Jennifer Haak said she believed that her classmates would be among those who help solve the world’s problems.
“The world is full of troubles that need addressing, like hunger, global warming, and the economy – to name a few,’’ Haak said. “I believe that this class more than any other possesses the power to inspire and lead by example.’’
