Detour

EPISODE VI: THE RETURN OF DETOUR: It’s that time of year again, if the sprouting orange barricades and cones haven’t tipped you off by now. But this year, things are a lot different.

Federal economic stimulus dollars are funding new county roadwork. State road work also is getting funding through the first state capital plan in a decade and a “mini” plan approved weeks beforehand.

For this year’s inaugural Detour column, we list some of the places in which you can expect to see road work this season, if it hasn’t started already.

This is not a complete list, so don’t be angry if you don’t see a project we should know about. Instead, e-mail us at detour@nwherald.com, and we will mention it in a future column.

ROUTE 31: Expect to see resurfacing of 7 miles between Route 12 and McCullom Lake Road in McHenry. Work also will begin soon to improve the route and traffic signals from Johnsburg Road to Blake Drive.

ROUTE 23: Route 23 is closed between Routes 14 and 176 as the Illinois Department of Transportation rebuilds bridges over the Kishwaukee River. It will remain closed through November.

Also, watch for resurfacing of Route 23 between Route 20 and Interstate 90.

ROUTE 173: Watch for resurfacing from Route 12 to the Lake County line in Richmond.

ROUTE 176: Portions of Route 176 east of Route 31 are down to one lane as resurfacing work continues.

ROUTE 47: Watch this year for resurfacing projects from Route 173 to Price Road in Hebron and between Routes 120 and 176 in Woodstock.

INTERSTATE 90: Overnight lane closures are scheduled this weekend for work between Route 31 and the Fox River Bridge.

RANDALL ROAD: Final paving work is ongoing between County Line Road and Harnish Road in Algonquin, weather permitting. Lane closures will be needed, so plan extra time, but work should wrap up early this week.
