Play 18 holes of golf ... on State Street?
MARENGO – Residents will get a chance to practice their putting skills during the third-annual Putt-Putt Challenge this weekend in downtown Marengo.
State Street will transform into a mini-golf course for a day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Participating businesses and organizations each build one of 18 miniature golf holes to challenge players. Some past years’ designs included obstacles in the form of cardboard dinosaurs and an oversized set of fake teeth.
All ages can play the entire day for $2, which includes free raffle drawings for cash and prize winnings. The registration desk will be on the corner outside Harris Bank, 100 W. Washington St.
In conjunction with the tournament, the Marengo Coin Shop will be giving away a $1,000 bill at 12:30 p.m. Marengo United Methodist Church also will host a rummage sale that afternoon at 119 E. Washington St.
Additionally, a collection of antique firetrucks from the Northern Illinois Fire Museum will be on display downtown.
The Putt-Putt Challenge is hosted by Marengo Main Street, a nonprofit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to preserving and promoting downtown Marengo for the benefit of the community.
Marengo Main Street recently received recognition from the National Trust for Historic Preservation as an accredited Main Street program. Earlier this spring, it was inducted into the Illinois Main Street program.
