Historical society
has annual meeting

The McHenry County Historical Society will host its 45th annual meeting at 7 p.m. today in the main exhibit hall of the society’s museum, 6422 Main St., Union. The meeting is open to the public.

Before the meeting begins, Jeff Jolitz and Don Purn, members of the Algonquin Historic Commission, will present a program on the history of picture postcards.

The annual meeting follows with reports on the state of the society, its financial status, various committees, and the administrator’s report. New board members will be elected.

Amateur golf
championship set

Some of the area’s best golfers will be in the field when the Illinois Junior Golf Association holds the Illinois State Junior Amateur Championship at Makray Memorial Golf Club in Barrington.

The three-day event starts Tuesday, with the top 50 golfers after 36 holes making the cut for the final 18 on Thursday. Local golfers, including Marian Central’s Luke Waggoner and Crystal Lake Central’s Riley Bauman, will be among the field.

Rescue squad to give
away tons of food

The Johnsburg Rescue Squad will host a free food distribution at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Johnsburg Community Club, 2315 W. Church St., Johnsburg.

The squad bought 10,000 pounds of food – enough for 200 families – from Northern Illinois Food Bank, and it will be given away to those who need assistance.

Food distribution will be on a first-come, first-served basis. No lines will be allowed before 3:45 p.m. Only those 18 and older will be allowed to get a ticket for food, and only one ticket per family will be given. Recipients are asked to provide their own storage containers for the food, such as a large box, tote, laundry basket or garbage bags.

Church to sponsor
ice cream social

Ridgefield Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church will sponsor the ice cream social Wednesday during the Woodstock City Band concert.

The social will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the park on the Woodstock Square.

Members of the “Cookie Walk Church” will bake cookie and brownie recipes from their own collections and from their recent cookbook, “Beyond the Cookie Walk.” Culver’s Oreo cookie sandwiches, and chocolate and vanilla frozen custard and toppings also will be available.

Families of the soldiers with the Woodstock Armory’s Delta Company 1st Battalion 178th Infantry Regiment have been invited as special guests. The proceeds will be used for the church’s Cookie Lift Project that sends care packages to the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Taste of Chicago
begins in Grant Park

Taste of Chicago, the yearly food festival on Chicago’s lakefront, will begin Friday and continue until July 5.

In addition to the food booths, offering fare from dozens of area eateries, the fest will feature music from Ne-Yo, Buddy Guy and Counting Crows, as well as children’s activities, cooking demonstrations and more.

Although entrance to Taste is free, food and beverage ticket strips will cost $8 in Grant Park. However, shoppers can buy the strips for $2 less at local Dominick’s stores until Thursday.

Community garage
sale kicks off

A community garage sale is set for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Huntley REC Center parking lot, 12015 Mill St.

No firearms, ammunition, animals, or other items deemed inappropriate by the Huntley Park District will be sold. Food and beverage sales also are not allowed.

The event is hosted by the Huntley Jaycees in conjunction with the park district.

Cardboard Cup
Regatta sets sail

America’s Cardboard Cup Regatta will celebrate its 25th year Saturday at Main Beach, 300 Lake Shore Drive, Crystal Lake.

Gates open at 9 a.m. for the annual championship cardboard boat racing event, which begins at noon. Cardboard is available at the Crystal Lake Park District Main Beach shed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and at the Main Beach house during beach hours. Legion post to host
annual pig roast

American Legion Post 1231 will host its annual pig roast and will rock the house with a live band Saturday.

The event starts at 5 p.m. at the American Legion hall, 1101 W. Algonquin Road, Lake in the Hills.

The annual pig roast draws residents from all over McHenry County; everyone is welcome.
Tickets for the beer garden cost $5. Tickets for dinner and the beer garden cost $15. The band Since I was 3 will perform its mix of modern and classic rock hits plus blues.

The Sons of American Legion Squadron 1231 sponsor events that help pay for veteran services and community projects.
