FRG residents turn up noses at smell

FOX RIVER GROVE – Officials are investigating a number of olfactory complaints raised by residents and homeowners near Fox River Grove’s wastewater treatment plant.

Public Works staff members have been cleaning the storage tanks at the plant to improve operations, Village Administrator Art Osten said. The cleaning combined with the recent heat wave might have made the odors worse, he said.

“We do not know if that is the cause,” Osten said. “The plant manager and village engineer are looking into it.”

They expect to have a report on the sewage plant smell for the village’s Public Works Committee early next month. The committee is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. July 2 at Village Hall, 305 Illinois St.

For Randy Crane, who lives on Witchie Drive in an unincorporated area near Fox River Grove, the smells have become overwhelming. Recently, Crane started handing out fliers to neighbors and residents to raise awareness about the problem. Crane and several others brought their concerns to the Village Board last week.

“This needs to be taken care of correctly,” Crane said.

He encouraged others irked by the smells to attend the July 2 meeting.
