Motorcyclist in critical condition

SPRING GROVE – A motorcyclist remains in critical condition after crashing into a guardrail along a curve Friday night on Route 12 near Sunset Road in Spring Grove.

The 41-year-old man – later identified as Joe Dornik – was airlifted to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where a hospital official said his condition had not improved overnight.

The crash closed traffic in both directions late Friday evening for almost an hour.

Dornik appeared to be headed toward Fox Lake about 8:27 p.m. when the crash occurred. Spring Grove police Sgt. Dave Holem said a witness driving in front of the motorcycle saw a cloud of dust in the rearview mirror and went back to check on the driver.

“We’re still trying to sort out what happened,” he said.

It is unknown if Dornik was wearing a helmet.
