FOX RIVER GROVE – District 3 schools are going to get some eco-friendly improvements this summer.
The District 3 school board approved a
$1,077,906 construction contract with Control Technology Solutions, a St. Louis-based company, for renovations to Algonquin Road Elementary School and Fox River Grove Middle School.
Control Technology Solutions plans to use green technologies aimed at reducing energy costs and maintenance expenses.
“In addition to fostering a better learning environment, the district will save money by utilizing green technology,” Superintendent Tim Mahaffy said. “Not only will we become more efficient, but the improved environment also will empower students to maintain their focus in the classroom.”
The District plans to replace every window with double-pane, low-emissivity windows that reflect heat back into the classrooms in the winter and reflect sun and heat out in the summer. This reduces the heating and cooling costs, said Gina Bicknese, a spokesperson for
Control Technology Solutions. The company also plans to improve insulation by installing fiberglass doors at entryways and vinyl cove bases where the walls meet the floor to eliminate drafts and prevent heat from escaping.
Repairs to the roof of Algonquin Road School also are part of the contract.
Efficiency-minded renovations are becoming more popular, said Bob Bennett of Control Technology Solutions.
“School districts and colleges across Illinois are increasingly looking for energy savings and environmentally friendly solutions,” he said.
Funds for the renovations come from up to $1.25 million in non-referendum debt the District 3 Board approved in late April.
