Reagan’s legacy
To the Editor:
How do you figure it? President Nixon was forced to resign while President Reagan is revered and has a statue placed in the Capitol Rotunda.
It can be argued that Reagan’s approval of a plan to sell missiles to Iran and then have the money transferred to the insurgents (Contras) in Nicaragua was more serious than what Nixon did in the Watergate affair. Congress had prohibited any aid being given to the Contras.
When Reagan approved the plan to sell missiles to Iran, it should be remembered that Iran supported terrorism and only eight years earlier had held American embassy personnel hostage for more than a year.
There also was evidence that Iran supported the terrorists responsible for the 1983 bombing in Lebanon that killed 240 Marines.
After the plan was discovered, Reagan claimed he did not remember any details. Congress decided not to impeach Reagan and allowed him to finish out his second term.
Reagan ignores the congressional ban on aid to Contras, sells missiles to a country that supported terrorism, and lies to Congress. He should have been impeached, but instead has a statue placed in Capitol Rotunda. I don’t get it.
