Low-income energy assistance available

By KEVIN P. CRAVER - kcraver@nwherald.com

The McHenry County Housing Authority is taking applications for participation in its low-income home energy assistance program.

The program during the summer is geared toward helping low-income households defray electricity costs.

Eligible residents who qualify can get a grant toward paying their electric bills.

Applications are made by appointment only, and eligible residents may make appointments by calling 815-338-7752.

Eligible residents include the elderly, the disabled, families with children up to 3 years old, and people with medical conditions that are made worse with extreme heat.

To qualify, household income during a 30-day period cannot exceed predetermined levels based on the number of people in the home.

Households with one person cannot make more than $1,354 in a month. The 30-day income limit is $1,821 for two people, $2,289 for three, $2,756 for four, $3,224 for five, and $3,691 for homes with six people.

People coming to an appointment must bring proof of income for all household members for the prior 30 days, their current utility bills, and Social Security cards for all household residents.

They also must bring their rental agreements or mortgage payment books, and documentation of medical condition or disability, if applicable.
