Soriano: ‘I’m not doing my job’
CHICAGO – Struggling Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano might find his name lower in the lineup today.
Soriano went 0-for-5 Friday against the Brewers and is 27-for-156 (.173) in his past 36 games.
“We’ll probably make a few adjustments with our lineup [today],” Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. “I have confidence in the young man, and that I feel he’s going to hit. We need to get him jump-started somehow.”
Soriano said he would accept a demotion in the batting order.
“I’m not doing my job batting leadoff,” Soriano said. “If he wants to change the lineup, it’s fine. The more important [thing] is to just be in the lineup and try to help the team win.”
Fans booed Soriano after he popped out with runners on first and third base in the fifth inning. They booed again when he led off the eighth and 10th innings with easy outs.
“They love the game,” Soriano said. “They can say whatever they want because they pay to see the game.”
Sun spot: Speaking of boos, fans let Cubs right fielder Milton Bradley hear it when he lost another ball in the sun Friday.
Brewers catcher Jason Kendall hit a high fly ball to Bradley, who shielded his eyes and reacted after the ball slammed off his right forearm. Kendall reached second base but did not score.
“Anything I can see, I can catch,” Bradley said. “I’ve never lost a ball in the sun until I played here.”
Bradley said he did not mind the boos.
“I’m used to it now,” he said. “It’s kind of like coming up to silence.”
Warning time: Home plate umpire Bill Welke warned both teams after a chippy fourth inning.
After Carlos Zambrano hit Prince Fielder on the arm in the top of the fourth, Brewers starter Jeff Suppan plunked Derrek Lee on the waist in the bottom of the inning.
“I didn’t mean to hit Fielder in that situation,” Zambrano said. “I’m just trying to pitch him inside, and the ball ran in too much. … But if they play like that, that’s OK to me. The good thing about it is Suppan is very professional. He hit Lee down [low], he didn’t throw at his head. Forget about it. The most important thing is that we won today, and we’re celebrating.”
Extra innings: Ryan Theriot earned his team-leading 10th stolen base in the eighth inning. … The Cubs have won their past three extra-innings games.
