Questions unanswered in swimmer's drowning death

SLEEPY HOLLOW – Many questions remain unanswered three days after a certified scuba diver drowned in her parents' pool.

Nineteen-year-old Anna Schneider, a competitive swimmer, was found floating face-down Saturday in the Sleepy Hollow pool in the 0-100 block of Katrina Drive.

"Knowing Anna, she's a fish," said her uncle, Chuck Frans. "You can't drown a fish in water."

Frans said Schneider's parents had been with her and one of her friends until about 3 a.m. The friend briefly went inside the house and found Schneider when she went back outside.

An ambulance was dispatched at 4:55 a.m. while Schneider's father, a former paramedic, performed CPR, Frans said.

"You can't imagine the grief you feel, having your daughter die in your arms," Frans said.

An autopsy was conducted Monday, and a news release from the Kane County Coroner's Office stated that the preliminary casue of death was drowning, but did not provide any further details.

"It's a mystery to me," Frans said. "I've got more questions than I've got answers."

Schneider, a 2008 Dundee Crown High School graduate, would have been a sophomore at the University of Hawaii where she was studying marine biology.

She was a passionate surfer with numerous swimming trophies, talented singer, and world traveler, her uncle said.

Schneider is survived by her parents, Lawrence and Martha, her brother, Phil, his wife, Lindsay, and their two children.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home, 504 W. Main St., West Dundee. It will continue from 9 a.m. Friday at the chapel until the 10 a.m. mass at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 845 W. Main St., West Dundee. Burial will immediately follow.
