Chrysler to resume operations in Belvidere

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BELVIDERE – Chrysler plans to restart production at its Belvidere plant and is recalling hundreds of workers.

Spokesman Max Gates says employees have been asked to report for work Wednesday. He says the plant will operate through Friday, then go in to a two-week shutdown planned for all Chrysler factories.

The Belvidere plant assembles Dodge Calibers, Jeep Patriots and Jeep Compasses. It's been idle since May 1, when Chrysler filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

In May, the company said it planned to lay off 992 of the factory's 2,600 workers on July 27. Gates says that decision is now being reassessed.
