Cary man charged after drug deal holdup

CARY – A Cary man is in custody after police said he tried to steal marijuana and money from two people involved in a drug deal.

Eighteen-year-old Erick Blanco of 750 Blazing Star Trail was charged with attempted aggravated robbery, which is a Class 1 felony, and criminal damage to property, a Class A misdemeanor.

Sheriff's police responded to 2709 Crystal Lake Ave. in Cary on June 26 for a report of an armed robbery. They were able to make the arrest after interviews of witnesses and collection of physical evidence at the scene, according to a news release.

Lt. Andy Zinke said that Blanco came out from behind a bush and approached two people involved in a drug deal while holding an Airsoft gun. He then tried to take about 8 ounces of marijuana and less than $300 in cash.

The case remains under investigation, and additional charges against other people are possible, Zinke said.

Blanco's bond was set at $40,000, and his next scheduled court date is July 17.
